In the comity of surgeons of Delhi if anyone is remembered as a great teacher with simplicity as his signature demeanor and an impressive surgeon – it would be Prof G D Goel.

Prof G D Goel started with humble beginnings and finished his undergraduate training at RG Kar Medical College, Calcutta in 1953. As was the wont in those days, he proceeded to the UK and worked his way through various jobs to take the Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons both at Edinburgh and England in 1958.

He returned to India and started his surgical career at LNJP and GB Pant Hospital where he worked till he achieved the position of Professor of Surgery.

He was idolized by his students and patients for his down-to-earth qualities of being a good human, calm and quiet stability with easy approachability. He left a legacy of great teaching in the students he trained to be good surgeons. He was sought after as a surgeon among his patients as well as colleagues.

He took premature retirement from LNJP and was persuaded by his peers to join the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital which was an upcoming institution for academically minded practicing professionals.

He led the Department of General Surgery and quickly made his impact as a teacher who made learning easy and pleasurable. He was the antithesis of the flamboyant surgical image. He inspired a whole generation and has left his imprint on their minds.

He continued his surgical journey till retirement and I had the great fortune of being his next in command. Life has its own journey path which have to be travelled by all.

In the words of one of his students who remained as his colleague 'There are a few people who are etched permanently in your memory and Prof G D Goel is one of them'.

His passage is a loss to the Department of General and Laparoscopic Surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and at LNJP – in fact to the whole surgical fraternity. He will always be remembered for what he was – a gentleman surgeon.
