Out of her Mother she came,
Born as we all are born.
To Shower her kindness and love
being a mother for us all,
And she returns to her mother,
Who eventually embrace us all,
To dissolve in earth
And to be with her forever
and forever…...

The unfortunate demise of emeritus Prof. (Mrs) Dr. Prem Kumari Mishra (Nee Sial), former Principal of King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), and Dr B. C. Roy Awardee, following long ailments has left KGMU family and the paediatric fraternity of India in a state of intense grief and is an irreparable loss for the society. She was suffering from chronic pulmonary disease for 2 years; however, her condition became critical in the past 15 days, which further deteriorated till she breathed her last on 18 February 2020 at her residence in Nishatganj, Lucknow, at 22:00 h. Doctors from various reputed institutions such as KGMU, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and various other reputed government and private institutions of India gathered and paid tribute to her. Her funeral procession left for Baikunth Dham next day at 14:00 h where she was cremated by her close family members.
A perfect amalgamation of knowledge, humanity and simplicity, she was also a well-respected paediatrician and motherly figure to most KGMU faculties, students and employees. Married to a renowned cancer surgeon, Late Dr. N. C. Mishra, she is survived by her son Prof. Sanjeev Mishra who is presently the Director of AIIMS, Jodhpur and Gorakhpur, and daughter Ms. Sumita Mishra, a senior IAS officer in New Delhi, India.
Prof. (Mrs) Dr. Mishra headed the Department of Paediatrics, KGMU, between 1987 and 1998. During her headship, she formed neonatology speciality and took over as the Principal and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in 1992–1998. With over 170 research articles published in reputed journals of international and national recognition, she was awarded with multiple prestigious awards during her entire academic career, namely, Dr. B. C. Roy Award (1990), U. P. Ratna Award (1995), Vigyan Ratna Award (2008), Senior Paediatrician Award (2003) and Life Time Achievement Award (2004). In addition, she was recognised with an esteemed title of 'Woman of Year'by the American Biographic Institute in the year 2000. She was a fellow of numerous reputed organisations, namely International College of Paediatrics-United States of America, Indian Academy of Paediatrics and National Academy of Medical Sciences of India (NASI)., Prof. (Mrs) Dr Mishra was also a well-recognised face in various esteemed institutions including Neonatology Forum and New York Academy of Science, General Editorial, Medical Research Council, Indian Medical Association, Medical Council of India and Indira Gandhi National Open University.
Prof. (Mrs) Mishra, a great soul, has left us alone but in her absence, she will be always remembered with love and respect by each one of us: her family members, medical fraternity, students, patients, friends and relatives – for her kind-hearted nature, unparalleled knowledge and genuine commitments towards the field of modern medicine.
On behalf of the entire AIIMS, Rishikesh (Uttarakhand) family, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to her son Prof. Sanjeev Mishra who is also my friend and his family members. May her soul rest in peace.
